The Chemical Biology area offers a flexible program of graduate study and research, with a diverse array of research opportunities in all aspects of chemical studies of biological systems in the laboratories of more than 30 faculty in the Department of Chemistry.

Bachelor of Science (BS) The Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Chemical Biology is intended for students who are interested in careers as professional chemists, or in the biological sciences including the biomedical, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical industries. Chemical Biology Chemical biologists generate and utilize chemical tools to explore biological systems. Researchers work at the intersection of the two disciplines to probe scientific questions at the molecular level. In the area of chemical biology, the Backus Group combines chemical probe synthesis with activity based protein profiling and chemical proteomics to develop chemical tools to manipulate the human immune system. Research within the group spans chemical biology, organic synthesis, pharmacology, immunology, biochemistry and systems biology.
